The leftover dead forest along the seward highway. The1964 Good friday earthquake created a tsunami that traveled down the Turnagain arm. The tsunami wiped out the original towns of Girdwood and Portage. Both towns were originally located along the coast line. Girdwood was rebuilt further inland, but the small town of Portage was never rebuilt. All that stands where the town of Portage was located are dead trees, drowned by the tsunami.
