  • Winter

    Winter

Who's ready for winter? Here in Anchorage the mountain tops are covered in a light dusting of snow. Sooner than later the snow will make its way down to the Anchorage bowl. I personally am not ready for winter.

  • Passing By

    Passing By

Most likely a set of footprints from a fellow photographer as they passed by looking for that perfect spot, for that perfect picture of the northern lights.

  • Night Lights

    Night Lights

The night lights of South Central Alaska. From left to right. Anchorage city lights, Milky way, and norhtern lights. Taken last night, 1/3/2019 along the Seward Highway.

  • The end of...

    The end of...

I shot this picture on Tuesday March 13th. In the picture I captured the end of a passing freight train for the Alaska Railroad. I wanted to capture the locomotive with a slower shutter speed, but I didn't have time to get my camera settings right before it had passed. Using a slower shutter speed would allow me to capture the movement of the train and the blowing snow around it. I instead settled for the the end of the train, hoping that a caboose would be the last train car. With the light and color of the setting sun I felt that the scene was very surreal. Sadly the beauty of this image is ruined by what happened less than an hour afterwards. At or around the railroad crossing of Arctic boulevard this freight train struck and killed a pedestrian that was on the tracks. I captured the beauty of the scenery around the end of the train. The same train that was soon to be the end of someones life.

While waiting for the smoke from the wood burning stove and the fog to clear on the Knik river I decided to take a picture of a random tree.

  • Sky Fire

    Sky Fire

kThe morning sky was on fire. This was taken from my back porch. Wishing I was in a more scenic location

  • Hoar Frost

    Hoar Frost

Hoar frost that has formed on a fallen branch at Eklutna Lake. Despite the warm glow of the sunrise, the temperature was well below zero on this morning

  • Staying Warm

    Staying Warm

The warmest place along the frozen river. The temperature was around -9 F. With the aid of hand and toe warmers, plus multiple layers of winter clothes I was pretty warm. Probably not as warm as the people were around the bonfire.

  • Movement in the Night

    Movement in the Night

Finally got some clear sky for a short time tonight. I headed down to one of my favorite spots along Seward Highway. As you can see there was a lot of cloud movement, along with the out going tide made for a very busy image

  • Turnagain Pass, Alaska

    Turnagain Pass, Alaska

A snowmachiners dream. Turnagain Pass Is covered in snow that is 15 to 20 feet deep. For some perspective , the two small dots at the base of the mountai, on the right, are snowmachiners. This is a 19 verticle image panorama.

  • Light and shadows

    Light and shadows

Surprisingly, this is actually not a black and white image. Here in Alaska, in the winter time the landscape often looks like a monochromatic photo. When the blue skies are covered with gray clouds a photo can look kind of colorless.

  • Looking for winter

    Looking for winter

Signs of winter have been hard to find at lower elevations around Southcentral Alaska. Every time we get a little snow, it is followed by a warm weather. So far it has been one of the oddest winters that I can remeber.

  • Ready for winter?

    Ready for winter?

Sunrise photo taken along Winner Creek trail looking up at the 7 glaciers restaurant. This was a sunrise shot that I had really been wanting to capture. This was my third attempt. The first two times the I failed because of rain and fog.

  • Wind Swept

    Wind Swept

The wind swept landscape of Beluga Point. This is an older picture from a few years ago. I really liked this one because of how the wind has blown the snow away creating leading lines in the direction of the gorgeous sunrise.

  • 3 Lights of Pioneer Peak

    3 Lights of Pioneer Peak

This shot is similar to one that i took last week along the Seward Highway. Like that shot this shot has the same three sources of light. The northern lights on the left, the milky way in the center, and the city lights of Anchorage on the right. The mountain in the middle is Pioneer Peak located along Knik River.

  • Fight back the darkness

    Fight back the darkness

  • Scenic Seward Highway

    Scenic Seward Highway

It's been a while since I went out shooting during the daytime. I decided to drive down Seward Highway. I didn't have a destination or composition in mind. Instread I chose to stop at almost every pull out and look for a creative compositon. This particular shot is a 15 shot panorama. It was taken just south of Girdwood, Alaska.

  • Winter Solstice sunrise

    Winter Solstice sunrise

Wanted to rework this image that I had previously posted. This image was taken during last winter's solstice. I had intended that morning to drive to Portage to take sunrise photos. It took me longer to drive than expected. I ended up having to pull over to this rest stop along the Seward highway.

  • Friday Night on the Knik River

Friday Night on the Knik River

Friday night on the Knik River. A group of teens hanging out around a bonfire. Shooting off fireworks while the Northern Lights dance overhead. This shot was actually somewhat challenging. I had my camera settings set to take pictures of the northern lights on a moonless night. Then the teens starting shooting off fireworks. I had to scramble to change my settings for the difference in light.
