Hawai'i (Big Island)
The distant mountain Pu'u Huluhulu is actually an old conical lava vent for Mauna Kea. I almost passed up this shot when the fog started rolling in from the left, shrouding the mountain in the background. I took this as one of my last pictures while on my Hawai'i vacation.

Waipi'o valley shot was taken half way down to the valley floor. A very strenous hike down to the valley and then back up the other side.

By using a shallow depth of field I was able to make the newly sprouted fern stand out from the rest.

The road appears to lead to Mauna Kea. You can just see the peak in the background center. No color was added to this photo. The green and orange that are under the milky way are city lights of Waikaloa and a little air glow.

The creation of new land as the 2000 degree lava meets the dazzling blue waters of the Pacific. The boat along the shore line gives you some perspective on how high up I am. Also gives you some idea of how much lava flows into the ocean.

I worked on this one previously and did not like how it turned out. So I started over and got it a little closer to what I saw the night I was out at Kilauea.

What once was a path to a volcanic steam vent is now being taken over by the ferns. The steam vent is still there just to the left right behind the small section of brick wall.
A beautiful canopied pathway that was eerily lit by a few lights leads into the darkness of Hawai'i. Actually this was the short path that leads from the volcano house hotel to the Volcano National Park visitor center.
I had no idea where I was going to shoot tonight. I just got in the car and started driving. Before I knew it I had driven half way to Hilo. I stopped to take a photo of the night sky. I knew that the milky way would be visible, but didn't expect that I would get the orange glow from Kilauea located in the center of the photo.
Hawaiian Milky Way near the beaches of Waikaloa, Big island, Hawai'i
This was shot prior to all the volcanic activity earlier this year on the big island. The caldera at Kilauea has since emptied. This amazing sight is no longer visible from the visitor center.
