Noctography
The swirling and dancing northern lights set the sky on fire over Twenty mile river, Alaska
This was the first big wave that passed over head. You can see the second wave coming over the mountains to the right.
The moon was shining so bright that it was drowning out the light from all the other stars except for the milky way. I also timed it so that the milky way lined up with Denali mountain, formerly known as Mt. McKinley. You can also see the beginning of the Northern lights activity to the right.
As I was driving home from my night of shooting the stars and Denali mountain I pulled over at a rest stop to stretch my legs. This was the view that I got to see. What you don't see is that the temperature was -8 F. I didn't know this when I got out of the car without my coat, gloves, or hat. I quickly realized that it was cold. This was taken right outside of Willow, Alaska around 12 am on 1/17/2016
This is the last northern lights photo from me for the season. With the sun setting after 9:30 it is getting too light at night to capture the northern lights.
The night time photography season is coming to an end in Alaska. In another month or so we will have very little darkness and a whole lot of daylight.
Quick stop along the Seward Highway to capture the lights. While I was shooting this a pack of coyotes were howling VERY near by. I guess they were enjoying the lights as well.

The tracks of the Alaska Railroad sit under the spectacular milky way.
The northern lights were so bright that I did not need a flash light to see.

City lights meet Northern Lights
The city lights of anchorage are the amber lights to the left. The Northern Lights are to the right. The little patch of white light in the middle is from Alyeska ski resort in Girdwood.
Such a great night at the Denali view point south. This was taken in the parking lot of the closed for the winter parking lot. I would have composed this better but the snow was to deep to navigate around
Another beautiful night for the northern lights.
I decided to redo this one because I wanted to fix the issue I had with the sharpening. I liked the way this turned out a lot better.
Had to hike a short distance in the dark through the thick bushes to get to this spot. Very creepy. In my head every little sound was a bear coming to get me. As you can see I got a great shot and made it out alive. This is a 8 photo panorama I light painted the foreground shots seperate from the sky shots.
The banks of Twenty mile river looks like it could be a landscape from another planet.
I've been working on old photos while I've been waiting for the winter snow to arrive. This shot was taken at my favorite spot, 20 mile river. I shot this last year around august.
This was taken tonight during the brief moment that we had clear skies. This corona was taken at Twenty mile river.
When the clouds get in the way
The Northern lights were out. Unfortunately there was a thin layer of clouds blanketing the whole sky. That's the reason for the aura around the stars.
Beautiful nights in the wilderness of Alaska
The edge of the solar storm running parallel to the milky way. This shot was taken on a night that I had originally intended for practicing my star photography. I went home with a lot morethan just stars.
The northern lights were shining so bright tonight. Everything had a green glow. A very beautiful sight that was a complete surprise.
One of my last night shots from my trip last week. I remeber this lake being almost a quarter of the way covered with Portage glacier. in the winter time the lake would freeze over traping the icebergs that had broken off. We would climb the icebergs and slide off. Now the lake rarely freezes and as you can see there is no glacier or icebergs because the glacier has receded to beach at the end of the lake.

The green grass in the field is almost an extension of the northern lights above. I light painted the foreground to bring out the detail in the grass.

This was taken on Friday the 13th of November along the Seward Highway.
This photo is similar to one of my recent post. The settings are slightly different. The detail of the milky way was better. The sea creature has been harpooned as it swims away. Those were my first thought as I was working on this picture.
Still going through the northern lights photos that I took this winter at Twenty mile river. While I wait for the trees to bud and the flowers I am forced to go over my winter pictures
Not sure what this train depot's name really is. I just call it the Portage train depot. I remeber in the 80's this was the only way to get to the city of Whittier by land. There was a gravel ramp that you would drive your vehicle up onto a train car. Then the train would go through the tunnel in the mountain to Whittier, Alaska. This facility is no longer used for that. A road has been added onto the tunnel train track and people can drive to Whittier.
Falling stars and passing satellites over Portage Lake, Alaska
Tonight was my first attempt at light painting. I wanted to bring more of the foregorund detail to the image without compromising the image the noise of having my ISO up too high. The green glow of the northern lights combined with the lit up green grass reminded me of emeralds.
